MuchMusic kicked off voting for the 2008 MuchMusic Video Awards earlier this week, giving fans their opportunity to cast a vote for the People’s Choice categories. In at least one category, the fight could be a hard-fought one, with last year’s victor Avril Lavigne facing off against Canada’s latest musical darling, Feist.

In the Favorite Canadian Artist category, fans can vote for Avril Lavigne’s “When You’re Gone”; Belly f. Mario Winans‘ “Ridin”; City And Colour for “Waiting…”; Feist’s huge hit “1234”; and Nelly Furtado, “Do It”. Following Feist’s sweep of all five of her Juno Award categories though, does anyone else stand a chance?

Three categories are open for voting, including Favourite Canadian Group and Favourite International Video.

Each year the MMVAs draws a huge crowd, with fans surrounding stages set up around the MuchMusic headquarters at Queen and John streets in downtown Toronto. With celebrities and special guests on-hand, the event is one of the biggest parties in Toronto, and is seen across the country and on select stations around the world.

One interesting change at MuchMusic is perhaps the least likely to matter to most fans, but it’s actually a big deal. In June, 2007 CTVGlobeMedia picked up ownership of MuchMusic, which means that both MTV and MuchMusic are operated by the same company in Canada. On the surface, MuchMusic has changed relatively little though, so the MMVAs appear mostly unaffected by the corporate shift.

The 2008 MMVAs hit the air live on Sunday, June 15 at 9:00 PM (ET). Stay tuned to The GATE for more coverage of the event, and visit www.muchmusic.com to cast your vote. The full list of MMVA nominees will be announced next week.
