Hedley tops 2008 MMVA nominations

by W. Andrew Powell

HedleyCanadian pop-rockers Hedley have an early lead for the 19th Annual MuchMusic Video Awards, claiming a total of six nominations for their radio hits, “For The Nights I Can’t Remember”, and “She’s So Sorry”. The band, which is fronted by Canadian Idol finalist Jacob Hoggard, has been a perennial fan favorite at both the Juno Awards and MMVAs, but are going to have to wait until Sunday, June 15 to find out if they can take home any hardware.

Following closely behind, with five nominations each, are illScarlett and Belly. City and Colour, Feist, Sam Roberts, and Simple Plan were among the other big-name Canadian artists nominated for awards.

This year marks the 19th annual MMVAs, which is sure to draw the usual flow of fans to the MuchMusic headquarters at the corner of Queen and John streets.

So far, MuchMusic hasn’t revealed details about stars or performers expected at the event, but last year’s show included the venue’s first-ever rooftop performance by Finger Eleven, and star appearances by Fergie, Hilary Duff, Sam Roberts, and Avril Lavigne, to name a few.

While MuchMusic has been a corner-stone in Canada’s music scene since it launched in 1984, it is amusing to note the relatively small amount of time the station devotes these days to playing music videos. That can be said of nearly every music-themed TV channel now, but the station has at least made up for this by providing a fairly comprehensive video player on their website.

The 2008 MMVAs take over downtown Toronto starting at 9:00 PM (ET) on June 15. Stay tuned for more announcements as they become available, and updates from the event right here on The GATE.
