CMW 2007, Night 1 – The Indies

by W. Andrew Powell

Canadian Music Week 2007 kicks off tonight at The Dock’s with the Independent Music Awards, or the Indies as they’re called, and it should be a cool night. Actually, looking at the lineup between now and Saturday night, it should be an awesome few days. One of the best lineups I’ve seen in the last six years of covering the event.

The cool thing about the Indies (besides the performances by DJ Champion, Cadence Weapon, Neverending White Lights, Hellogoodbye, Priestess, and The Stills) is the fact that it’s really all about recognizing the bands and musicians the Junos seem to forget about. But I have to admit I’m also excited to see Emm Gryner, Danko Jones, and the darling Tara Slone (although the press info spelled her last name “Sloan”) as they present the awards.

Stay tuned – when I get home tonight I’ll be posting pictures, along with news on tonight’s winners, and then there will be more info tomorrow on some of my picks for shows you need to see between now and Saturday.
