First, there’s The Couple, with Kristin Booth as Abby and Josh Dean as Andrew. They are trying to find a way to spice up their love life, but they don’t quite realize how bad things have become, and Andrew might be surprised by the solution.

With The Friends, Aaron Abrams is Matt and Carly Pope is Kris, two lifelong buddies exploring their relationship in each other’s arms, but their plan to keep it just about the sex gets complicated when emotions leap into the mix.

Looking in at The Exes, Sonja Bennett is Mia and Josh Cooke plays Eric, a former couple who hooks up again for fun, but can’t seem to ever be completely honest about their feelings.

The First Date stars Callum Blue as Ken the lady killer, out for a date with the naive Jamie, played by Diora Baird. It may take some time, but over the course of the night they will finally open up and reveal their secrets to each other.

And last, but certainly not least there is The Roommates. Peter Oldring is Dave, who spends the strange night with his roomie couple, Gord, played by Ennis Esmer, and Inez, played by Natalie Lisinska. This funny threesome will take a few odd turns as the couple deals with their issues, and Gord and Dave figure out whether they are really friends or not.

Given the title alone, this is obviously the kind of film that likes to push buttons, but the hot cast is put to great use beyond exposing their fair share of skin. Young People Fucking is an undeniably great drama, with excellent performances from this clever, sexy cast.

Andrew Powell http://thegate.ca/blog/2007/09/06/tiff-07-day-1-at-the-fest/ Today is officially the first day of the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival, although I feel like I’ve been preparing for the fest to start for six months now.

With pass in hand though I kicked off the festival this afternoon by heading to the Young People Fucking screening (to prepare for interviews tomorrow). Martin Gero directed the film, and co-wrote the script with Aaron Abrams, who also plays Matt. Together they’ve crafted a funny and smart film about all the issues surrounding sex and relationships. From the quasi-threesome to the friends who decide to have some fun together, all the characters are memorable and well played.

I don’t think there was a single cast member that I didn’t enjoy, but I have to admit that personal favorites include Carly Pope as Kris, Callum Blue as Ken, Kristin Booth as Abby, and Josh Dean as Andrew. Although Diora Baird has a cool, and kinda sly role as Jamie.

I’ll have a full review soon, and interviews with some of the cast. I’m also trying to decide if I’m going to the party tonight, so I may have photos from there as well.

My other plans for the day include heading over to the gala red carpet for Fugitive Pieces, which starts in a couple of hours, and then dropping by the kick-off party for a few photos as well.
