This week on DVD and Blu-ray: Daniel Day-Lewis stars in the musical drama, Nine; things get a little strange in Terry Gilliam‘s Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus; and Steven Spielberg‘s moving war epic Saving Private Ryan arrives on Blu-ray.

Opening in a theatre near you this weekend, Tim Burton directs the trippy remake of Disney’s Alice In Wonderland; and a look at Antoine Fuqua‘s crime drama, Brooklyn’s Finest.

Opening this week just in time for Christmas holidays, Robert Downey Jr. stars as tough but wise Sherlock Holmes; Daniel Day-Lewis stars in Rob Marshall‘s musical, Nine; plus a look at Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, It’s Complicated, Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, and Up In The Air.

New this week on DVD and Blu-ray, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince debuts just in time to make onto your holiday shopping lists; Johnny Depp stars as bank robber John Dillinger in Public Enemies; plus a look at Julie & Julia, The Cove, and the fifth season of Lost.

Out this week in theatres, following their Canada Day debut, Michael Mann‘s Public Enemies looks back at the infamous criminal John Dillinger and his run from the FBI. Plus, we take a look at the third Ice Age film, Dawn of the Dinosaurs, and the brainy sci-fi drama, Moon.

Public Enemies was probably the only movie I was actually waiting for this summer with any sense of excitement or anticipation. Johnny Depp is on a real tear right now, so is Christian Bale, and director Michael Mann, for my money, has never made a bad movie. Some of his movies are better than others but they are all extremely well made and usually very interesting.

This week we have what you might call a slow week in new DVD releases, with just two notable films arriving in stores. On the one hand you have the creepy, menacing, and bloody Sweeney Todd, with Johnny Depp starring as the man with the straight razor himself. For those of you not looking for a film about jugular-splitting revenge, Alvin and the Chipmunks also arrives this week, although you might wish Mr. Todd was paying you a visit if sticky-sweet remakes aren’t your thing.

The holidays are upon us, and as the year draws to a close a few, final big films slip their way into theatres. This week, check out a hilarious mock music biography, a sequel to Disney’s National Treasure, Tim Burton‘s dark musical, a Cold War drama, and the story of a dead man who points his wife to life after his own death.
