Celebrity karaoke

by W. Andrew Powell

When I first heard about Celebrity Duets I can’t deny that I was intrigued. Come on, who doesn’t want to see stars teamed up with real singers to see how they might crash and burn? But there’s one element missing from the show that kinda sucks all the life away from it and that’s the opportunity for real criticism.

Sure, it’s interesting for like 30 seconds to see these stars teamed up singing radio friendly pop songs (like Lucy Lawless and Michael Bolton together at last). But in the end it’s just another televised karaoke contest (hello Canadian Idol and American Idol) without any of the bite of judges with actual words that might hurt a star’s feelings. I mean really, is David Foster actually going to yell at Cheech Marin for singing badly?

Whatever though – really, who cares? It’s a Fox show, it’s mildly amusing, and it’ll likely do well just because people love to see celebrities doing, well, anything.

P.S. Wayne Brady annoys the shit out of me.
