Sophie Simmons makes her musical premiere with “Black Mirror”, a brooding pop song with a beating heart that’s plaintive and fierce, with a rock sensibility that drives the track to higher ground.
“Black Mirror” features evocative lyrics set to a retro-themed music video that’s dark, and emotional, drawing you in to Simmons’ story, and making you feel a little trapped in this little window where she’s focused. Like the series that the song references, part of the pain of the song is letting a piece of technology rule your life, where our relationship with a person meets our dependence on a device.
As Simmons explains it, “The song is about love, self-sabotage and our attachment to technology.”
“I’ve been chewed up and spit out and trampled on / But I like it, the taste of a love gone wrong / Always waiting, this feeling inside my bones / I’ll be starin’ ’till something lights up my phone, Black Mirror.”
The 25-year-old singer, and actress, has a bit of an edge when it comes to music, thanks to her very-famous father: the one and only Gene Simmons. Sophie Simmons got her start in their family docu-drama, Gene Simmons: Family Jewels, but since then, she’s been working on her career, and giving back; she even founded Sophie’s Place, a Vancouver-based center for abused children.
