Over the past year, Netflix has branched out from simply providing viewers with content–which Netflix in turn must pay royalties on–to producing their own original content. Netflix will continue to pursue this direction with the approval of a second season of the gothic mystery thriller Hemlock Grove.

Hemlock Grove is one among several shows in Netflix’s foray into original programming. They began with the much buzzed about House of Cards, which follows a Washington power couple and their presidential ambitions. This was followed by the release of Hemlock Grove and a new season of Arrested Development.

The show tells the story of strange happenings in a small Pennsylvania town and the unlikely friendship between a young heir to a prominent family, Roman Godfrey, and a new arrival and outsider, Peter Rumancek. Each has a secret that they must deal with.

“The worldwide fan response to Hemlock Grove was phenomenal,” said executive producer Eli Roth. “Netflix members loved the potent combination of sexy monsters, mystery, and the dark family soap opera that ended with a huge twist, leaving audiences worldwide totally shocked. Season One was just a warm up for what we have in store for season two. Get ready to be scared in ways you never expected.”

The show is based on the Brian McGreevy book of the same name. It is the first television project by Eli Roth who is renowned for horror films Hostel and Cabin Fever. Experienced showrunner Charles H. Eglee with be joining the show for season two. Eglee is known for his work as executive producer on The Walking Dead, Dexter and The Shield.

“In its first season, Eli, Brian, Lee and the team did an incredible job of introducing viewers to a unique world of memorable characters,” said Cindy Holland, Vice President of Original Content at Netflix. “Chic’s addition to the show, and his experience on such fan favorites as ‘The Shield,’ ‘The Walking Dead’ and ‘Dexter,” will heighten the intensity of the mystery that grips Hemlock Grove.”

The second season will consist of 10 episodes that will be premier in 2014.
