Originals arrive with Xbox 360 dashboard update

by W. Andrew Powell

The Xbox 360 is about to get a little more social as Microsoft announced details for their Fall dashboard update, scheduled to happen on December 4th at 2:00 AM (PT).

Included in the update will be the rollout of Xbox Originals, new family functions, and the ability to view full-screen trailers, not to mention support for additional video codecs.

In the case of the Xbox Originals, the new service will allow gamers to download original Xbox titles like Crash Bandicoot: Wrath of Cortex, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, Halo, Fable, and Fuzion Frenzy for 1200 Microsoft Points. It is worth noting however that the official Xbox website says that there are issues with the games running properly. Most of the issues are centred around minor graphics and audio problems, but the site also warned that in-game demos or trailers could crash the games.

The most talked about change will be a bit more social however, with Xbox Live unveiling options to expand your profile, and boost the social networking aspects of the service. Since social networking has become such a hot topic it’s no wonder that Xbox Live is going in this direction, but it remains to be seen how popular it will be.

Finally, the Xbox 360 dashboard gets some navigational upgrades, Game Store and Video Store buttons, and a Family Timer to let parents (or your evil roommate) limit the amount of time the system can be used each day.

More features will be rolled out with the update, although the press release didn’t go into specifics. You can find out more about the update on the Xbox.com website.
