Finale ‘Harry Potter’ book confirmed for July 21

by W. Andrew Powell

Is Harry Potter going to die this year? Or will it be his arch-nemesis, the evil Lord Voldemort? The answer to this question, and many more will officially be in the hands of Harry Potter fans this summer at midnight on July 21 when the final book in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, hits store shelves.

With the latest film, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, debuting in theatres on July 13, July could very well turn into Harry Potter month. This year also happens to be a special one for the series since it’s officially the 10 year anniversary of the original book that started it all – Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

The only bad news for fans is that this final book could hold a bittersweet ending as author J.K. Rowling confirmed last year that several characters will die… and Harry Potter could be one of them.

“I have never been tempted to kill him off before the final because I’ve always planned seven books and I want to finish on seven books,” Rowling said during a TV interview.

Rowling’s series has become a cultural phenomenon around the world, creating a whole legion of fans who buy the books, go to theatres to see the movies, and buy all the branded merchandise. Not to mention fan websites, and forums devoted exclusively to story speculation.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is expected to retail for $45 in Canada. Once it’s out though, what will Potter fans have to look forward to?
