Dylan Playfair has grown up with hockey. He played hockey as a kid, his father was a coach for the NHL, and, like a lot of kids, he watched all the The Mighty Ducks movies on repeat. That’s what makes his latest role such a big deal to the Canadian actor, working alongside Emilio Estevez in the new Disney+ series, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers.

The new series is set in modern day Minnesota as 12-year-old Evan, played by Brady Noon, is trying to join the now legendary Mighty Ducks junior hockey team. When his dreams are dashed by Coach T, played by Playfair, his mother sets out on a mission to create a new team–the Don’t Bothers–with the help of the one-and-only Gordon Bombay, the Ducks’ original coach.

With Lauren Graham as Alex, Evan’s mom, and Estevez back as Gordon, the show is a family friendly, funny, light series that’s filled with hockey, and a message about the joy of the sport.

For Playfair, it was a dream gig, not only working with Estevez and Graham, but working with Disney once again.

“Coach Bombay taught me everything I need to know about being a man,” he joked. “It truly was a really, really cool experience to see him and interact with him, and then to act with Bombay. Wow, what a trip.”

“It’s hard to call it work,” he said.

Estevez was one of the first people Playfair met on set, and he was “very, very involved in the process,” something that Playfair said that “really anchors” the “strong morals” of the original movies, and the new series.

And while the Letterkenny star was recognized a lot on set, by the adults, for his part on that iconic Canadian series, the kids on set knew him from something else.

“It’s funny, actually, because a lot of kids on that set recognize me from Some Assembly Required, which was even before Disney days.”
