Writer-Director Ian Tuason and Stars Nina Kiri and Adam DiMarco Talk About the Canadian Thriller undertone

by Andrew Parker

A massive sleeper hit that has already grossed many times its modest budget at the global box office, writer-director Ian Tuason’s undertone (now playing in theatres everywhere) has been billed as “the scariest horror movie you’ve ever heard.” In the film, Nina Kiri stars as Evy, the co-host of a podcast that takes a deep dive into the nature of spooky found recordings. As the skeptic of her duo, Evy (who’s also caring for her ailing mother alone in her home) debunks everything she hears using logic, while on the other end of the internet, her co-host, Justin (voiced by DiMarco, who also has a starring role in the new Netflix series Something Very Bad is Going to Happen) acts as the true believer.

When Justin presents Evy with a series of recordings that he received in a mysterious email, that’s when Tuason kicks things into high gear. The recordings appear to depict a married couple going through some sort of haunting, possession, or crisis, but the horrors depicted on the files will soon translate over to Evy’s everyday life, preying on her own worst fears.

Earlier this month, we had the honour of sitting down with Tuason, Kiri, and DiMarco in the actual house where undertone was filmed. We talked about creating a podcast dynamic for a film built around sound design, DiMarco’s off camera role as a paranormal believer, how Kiri locked into her character’s sense of isolation, and if they thrive better in a noisy or silent environment.

undertone is now playing in theatres everywhere.
