William Woods makes the jump from producing some of Canada’s most notable independent films to making one of his own with the sci-fi thriller The Outer Threat, which hits Canadian theatres this weekend. With a notable list of credits to his name including Mean Dreams, Castle in the Ground, The Kid Detective, and The King Tide, Woods sets his first effort as a writer-director in an uncertain world facing numerous threats overlapping at the same time.
Constance Wu and Mark O’Brien star as Michelle and Daniel, a married couple whose relationship has been on the rocks for quite some time. They live in the middle of nowhere with their two kids. Daniel is a NORAD employed astronomer who has become obsessed with proving there’s life outside our solar system, while Michelle is what one might call a lapsed astrophysicist who has become disenchanted by her husband’s obsessions and prefers spending time with the kids, instead. Daniel gets the validation he needs when he discovers the existence of a planet capable of sustaining life, and while his attempts to get anyone at his job to believe him after years of false leads falls flat, Michelle realizes that he might be onto something huge. She also doesn’t want him to go public with this information, fearful of how a planet already on the brink of major collapse would deal with the news of potential life on other planets. Daniel eventually gives into his impulses, and almost immediately things go from bad to worse in the world, sending the family on the run across inhospitable landscapes from an entity that wants to silence them.
Also co-starring alongside Wu and O’Brien in The Outer Threat is veteran character actor William Fichtner, who plays Sam, a kindly seeming diner owner who takes Michelle and Daniel’s family in for a spell during a time of need. An actor with over a hundred credits to his name, Fichtner (who can also currently be seen in the Apple TV series Lucky as one of the main villains) is no stranger to films dealing with dystopias and apocalypses, having appeared in the likes of Armageddon, Independence Day: Resurgence, Drive Angry, and Equilibrium.
We sat down with Woods and Fichtner during a recent press day in Toronto to talk about The Outer Threat, how the COVID shutdown helped Woods make the jump from producing to directing, what Fichtner has learned about humanity’s ability to withstand hardship from having done several films about the collapse of society, setting the film in a rural location, and how the science behind the film is starting to become more of a reality.
