‘Midway Munchies’ uncovers unique fair flavours

Midway Munchies

Only at a fair can you get that special kind of food that can be considered both weird, wonderful, and utterly bad for you. The idea of healthy fair food actually seems like a crazy idea, and that’s why a show like Midway Munchies exists–to show off some of the weird and sometimes delicious creations being sold at fair ground across the United States.

Sometimes, the ideas are just junky: deep fried anything, or Nutella as a main dish; but most of the time the food falls into that special category of “stunt food” that we’ve heard a lot more about over the last few years. So what are some of the specialties the show takes a look at? How about Chicken Wing Ice Cream, Red Velvet Funnel Cake, Deep Fried Cheesecake, Fried Green Tomatoes, Swamp Cabbage, or Gator on a Stick?

I enjoy a good food show now and then, and like a lot of them, Midway Munchies actually shows how some of these creations are made, but what’s different here is the atmosphere. These fairs and exhibitions are all about the unusual, so unusual food is a perfect fit. Some of the chefs, and I do use that term loosely, are gleeful about their cooking in a way that always seems right at home on your average fairgrounds.

As a fair fanatic, that’s probably why I like the show, and host Noah Cappe brings the right mix of charm and amazement to the show, even as he’s nibbling on Swamp Cabbage or Gator on a Stick.

Catch Midway Munchies on Food Network in Canada on Friday, October 11 at 7:00 PM (ET), or again at 10:30 PM (ET). The episode will also re-air on Saturday, October 12 at 6:00 PM (ET).
