Video Hits: Serebro’s “Mama Lover”

Serebro Mama Lover

If it wasn’t for my trip to Italy this summer, I probably wouldn’t even know who Serebro were, but in Europe, the girls are a big deal. Their video for “Mama Lover,” their biggest hit, and one of the biggest singles to ever come out of Russia, has been seen millions of times on YouTube, and the song is totally fun and infectious.

Formed in 2007 through the Eurovision Song Contest, the band is made up of Elena Temnikova, Olga Seryabkina, and Anastasia Karpova, and they’re clearly doing not-so-bad since, not only is the song catchy, but of course sex sells, so the girls being just a bit hot doesn’t hurt them any.

“Mama Lover” is also a surprisingly great video though, and while Psy’s video for “Gangnam Style” works because of Psy himself–and because there’s so much going on–the video for “Mama Lover” is brilliant because it’s so simple: three girls acting stupid in a car. No special effects, no elaborate sets–just the song and the antics.

Watch the video below, but just note that it’s not exactly work safe thanks to underwear flashing and random acts of girlie frolicking.

Video Hits is a semi-frequent spot featuring a new music video to admire, mock, and discuss. From the great to the awful, whether they’re from twenty years or twenty minutes ago. Check out the 2011 archives over at Vevo, and watch all the 2012 videos on YouTube.

For you Canadians out there, the title of this series is totally a tribute to CBC’s original 80s TV series, Video Hits.
