Listen Now: Noah Kahan’s “Hurt Somebody” with Julia Michaels

by W. Andrew Powell
Noah Kahan's Hurt Somebody

This is one of the most addictive, beautiful singles that I’ve heard so far in 2018. Singer and songwriter Noah Kahan‘s “Hurt Somebody”, with Grammy nominated artist Julia Michaels, is a powerful single that’s driven by a quick beat, and it’s incredibly tender.

“Hurt Somebody” builds simply with Kahan’s vocals and a guitar rhythm until Michaels leaps in, and then the song flies as the beat climbs higher. Michaels and Kahan bring yearning, heartache, and love to the track, and the song builds to a perfect peak as the two sing with–and also against–each other. The song is about turmoil and not just falling into love, but falling out of it.

Watch the original video for “Hurt Somebody” and give it a listen on Spotify. The song is also on my January 2018 Fresh Indies playlist.

Noah Kahan recently released his debut EP, which is also called Hurt Somebody, and it features the new tracks “Catastrophize”, “Passenger”, and “Please”. On Instagram, Kahan said “each one of these songs means the world to me. I hope that you connect with them as much as I have, and I hope that you fall in love with each one.”

Kahan has performed and toured with Anderson East, The Strumbella’s, Milky Chance, and Ben Folds, and he was also named Bandsintown’s “Top 5 Fastest Growing New Artists”. Working with Lorde and Khalid’s producer Joel Little, he recorded six tracks including his debut single “Young Blood”, which entered Spotify’s U.S. Viral Chart at #5, and earned 15 million streams.

Noah Kahan is on tour now. You can catch him coming up across Canada and the United States.
