Watch: Eric Schenkman’s “Who Shot John?”

by W. Andrew Powell

Former Spin Doctors guitarist and a vocalist Eric Schenkman released the title track from his new album, “Who Shot John?”, and it’s bluesy, slick, and a lot of fun.

Playing Grossman’s Tavern in Toronto for more than a decade, the singer, songwriter, and guitarist co-wrote all of the Spin Doctors’ top 100 hits, and he’s worked with a number of artists over the years, from Chico Hamilton, Carly Simon, and Natalie Merchant, to Noel Redding, Phoebe Snow and Corky Laing.

For Schenkman, Who Shot John? “comes from a convergence of my three worlds–vocals, guitar and songwriting,” he said. “It’s about my life. Where I’m at now.”

That convergence also includes a coming together of sounds, from rockin’ blues to funk, soul, and pop.

“When you struggle through life you end up expressing yourself about it. And that’s when music happens. These songs are my expression of what is happening around me, really around all of us, right now.”

Oh, and that title? It’s an old saying that Schenkman sums up very simply: “cut the bullshit, let’s get real.”

Who Shot John? will be available on October 26.
