Nelly Furtado will follow in the footsteps of Canadian celebrities like the Barenaked Ladies, Shania Twain, and Pamela Anderson as she’s been announced as the host for this year’s Juno Awards. Known around the world for her hits “Promiscuous” and “Maneater”, the Canadian singer/songwriter, and previous Juno winner, will host the event from the Credit Union Centre in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on Sunday, April 1.

The Junos are Canada’s most well known award for musicial achievement, honouring all kinds of musical genres with a full weekend of events culminating in the live telecast.

Last night’s announcement, which came during the 64th Annual Golden Globe Awards, is the first of many which will lead up to the big show that airs live on CTV. Aside from the list of performers and local events, the next notable event is the announcement of Juno nominees which will take place at a media event in Toronto on Tuesday, February 6.

“The Juno Awards are part of the Canadian fabric and to be asked to host is a privilege I’m charmed to accept,” Furtado said in an interview with CTV’s eTalk. “Hosting The JUNO Awards is a dream come true and I look forward to carrying on this rich Canadian tradition. See you in Saskatoon!”

Furtado, who originally hails from Victoria, B.C., first made a name for herself with her 2000 debut, Whoa, Nelly!. Since then she’s toured around the world and worked with a number of international stars and big producers, including Timbaland, Chris Martin, and Jon Levine.

This will be the 36th Annual Juno Awards, which are run by the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS), a the not-for-profit organization that has been running the awards since 1977. The Junos have been handed out since 1970, however they were originally called the Gold Leaf Awards.
