Asher Grodman doesn’t seem to have a lot in common with his character on Ghosts, but he does admire him. Now in the series’ fifth season, Trevor has a fratboy attitude sometimes, but as Grodman says, there’s a lot more to him.
“I mean, I think there’s a lot at this point, after five years in, that I could write like a hundred things about this guy that define him,” Grodman said.
“There’s a competitive thing to Trevor that I definitely relate to. He has a self-confidence that I envy, even just walking around, you know, half naked all the time and being so comfortable with it.”
“And I think that he has an impulse in him; on the page Trevor could be this very, you know, douchy, the frat boy, all that stuff. But at the core of all those impulses, I think–and I try to put this in the work, and I feel like the writers have leaned into this too–is a guy who really values friendship and who really wants the party to keep going.”
While he admits that you could read a lot into that, “you could also think of that as he just wants everyone to be together, you know? He just wants his family, he wants his friends, he wants to feel connected to people.”
“I kind of find the heart of this guy and almost at times like that puppy-ish quality. He’s got a lot of self-respect and he’s not going to take a lot of shit, but he does kind of want to bring people together.”
Once again for season five, Ghosts will have 22 episodes, and Grodman is happy they get so much time to work with.
“Yeah, God, isn’t that crazy? And especially in this world right now where it seems to become harder and harder to make stuff, it almost feels like a bygone era, to be able to have this opportunity to tell these longunning stories. I think we’re going to hit like a hundred episodes probably at the beginning of next season, which is insane.”
One of the key moments in this season for Trevor was connecting with the character’s daughter, Abby Pinkus, played by Gideon Adlon.
“I think something that was really interesting about the three of these episodes with Abby, and something that I kind of came with from the first episode, is Trevor having this realization that she’s kind of better off that she [was raised by Trevor’s friend] Pinkus.”
“He gets to see this miraculous young woman that his friend raised and I think there’s something very humbling and interesting about being a dad–because so much of his motivation is very selfish in that episode–and having her come back, and this moment where, for the first time we’re telling someone about the wacky stuff that’s happening in this house, and it was unexplored territory.”
“It was really kind of exhilarating to play, and you’re a little trepidacious because you’re like, ‘well this is the biggest rule of the show,’ you know, ‘hush hush, there are ghosts here,’ and now we’re going to break that.”
