Video Interview: Jessica Phillips and Ennis Esmer from Wipeout Canada

by W. Andrew Powell

If bravery is judged by a person’s sheer willingness to go up against any obstacle and fall flat on their face, then the contestants of Wipeout Canada must be some of the bravest people in the country. Either that, or they simply haven’t watched Wipeout before.

Debuting tonight, Sunday, April 3, on TVtropolis at 8:00 PM, Wipeout Canada brings the familiar wet, messy, and often ridiculous Wipeout obstacle course to your television once again, but this time with Canadian contestants, and the friendly faces of hosts Ennis Esmer and Jonathan Torrens, plus the show’s on-the-scene co-host Jessica Phillips.

On Friday, I had a chance to chat with Jessica and Ennis, and here’s what they had to say about hosting this offbeat game show.

Fact Sheet: About the Hosts

Ennis Esmer moved to Canada from Ankara, Turkey as a child and went on to study theatre and sketch comedy. In addition to Wipeout Canada you can also also catch Ennis as Oz in The Listener, and he will also appear in the upcoming new series Good Dog. His resume boasts hosting and creative consultanting for The Toronto Show, and major roles in Young People F*cking, The Border, Murdoch Mysteries, and Covert Affairs.

Jonathan Torrens has been working as an actor, host, writer and producer for more than 20 years, working in both film and television. While Jonathan is currently working on the third season of his TVtropolis series TV with TVs Jonathan Torrens, you can also catch him on Call Me Fitz or as J-Roc on The Trailer Park Boys. Aside from his other roles, long-time fans will likely remember him most for his series Jonovision, and of course his work on Street Cents.
