A luxury escape to Turks & Caicos

By W. Andrew Powell • Nov 25th, 2008 • Category: Travel

Sun destinations are a fantastic way to escape the chill of Canada’s fall and winter months, but recently I had the good fortune of something a little bit grander than a simple getaway.

For a week I was lucky enough to spend time at some of the most luxurious resorts in Turks and Caicos, where I have to admit it felt a bit more like I was escaping to a real life “Fantasy Island.” Even weeks later, after my tan is fading, and I’m completely back in my grove, I still have to admit that it was one of the most memorable, amazing trips I have ever taken.

… come fly with me
Let me just get up here on my little soap box for a second, I have a story to share…
Back in August, Aisha and I decided to make plans for a fall vacation to Turks and Caicos. It took some time, but we found a couple of hotels, and managed to [...]

Grandview, tiny room

Last weekend, Aisha and I spent a night at the Delta Grandview in Huntsville, and I was more than a little surprised that it turned out to be a bit of a disappointment.

Stuart McLean’s traveling show

By W. Andrew Powell • Apr 20th, 2008 • Category: The GATE, Travel

On Saturday I had a few minutes to chat with Stuart McLean before he set out on VIA Rail for a journey from Toronto, to Vancouver, and back again for a special show he’s doing on the train. Stuart is the amazing host of the Vinyl Cafe on CBC Radio, and I’m a huge fan, [...]

Rodney MacDonald’s Top 10

By W. Andrew Powell • Jan 11th, 2008 • Category: Television, Travel

This is one of those great moments that says, at least to me, why the East Coast of Canada is so awesome. Apparently David Letterman mentioned during an interview with Nova Scotian actress Ellen Page that he had heard the province was beautiful and might have to visit some day. Locals latched onto the idea, [...]

Hotel horrors

By W. Andrew Powell • Jan 9th, 2008 • Category: Travel

We’ve been hearing the hotel horror stories for ages now. Filthy rooms, unchanged sheets, and so on. This one didn’t surprise me in the least, but it’s one that I bet most of you have never thought of…

That said, I can’t get over how scared people are of every little thing. As my friend Peter [...]

The Story of Scotland, Part 4

By W. Andrew Powell • Jul 10th, 2007 • Category: Photography, Travel

(Continued from Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3.)
On our way back to Glasgow for our last night in Scotland we chose to stop off at a nearby castle before we even realized it wasn’t just any castle – it turned out that Doune Castle, which was used as the set for Monty Pythοn and [...]

Nessy, is that you?
(Continued from Part 1 and Part 2.)
By this point in our trip we realized that the end was getting very close. We woke up late on May 26, almost missing breakfast, but managed to get up and out and on the road fairly quickly. Being in Loch Ness meant we couldn’t just [...]

Aisha & Wil at Melrose Abbey
(Continued from Part 1…)
Waking up the next day, Tuesday, May 22, we went down to breakfast in Dalhousie Castle’s Orangery and then went off to see Melrose Abbey which was really a stunning place to see. Rosslyn Chapel will astound you for being so packed with art, while Melrose will [...]

The Story of Scotland, Part 1

By W. Andrew Powell • Jun 8th, 2007 • Category: Photography, Travel

Some time ago, on May 18th to be exact, I went on a trip to Scotland with Aisha for a bit of a vacation. Okay, that would be 10 days of vacation all told, and we planned to drive around most of the country and see as many sites as we could manage. This my [...]
