Project Hail Mary review | A stellar popcorn adventure

by W. Andrew Powell

Ryan Gosling stars in the action-packed adaptation of Andy Weir’s stellar adventure, Project Hail Mary.

Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the film is pure eye candy, with a big heart, and lots of do-or-die moments along the journey that takes science teacher Ryland Grace from Earth to a whole other solar system.

The film perfectly balances a scientific story, and a personal journey, with comedy and action, alongside a very unique co-star: Rocky, the alien. Both Grace and Rocky are on a mission to discover why one star in the galaxy seems to be unaffected by a mysterious life form that is killing off every other star, including Earth’s sun. Their answer will either save both species, or it could be their doom.

Project Hail Mary has a slightly long running time, at 2 hours and 36 minutes, and while I wish it was a little shorter, the film maintains a momentum and pace that’s kinetic, and even a bit unexpected. The story unfolds in clever ways, and as someone who didn’t read the book, every turn was a surprise.

And on top of everything, Grace is no hero. He’s thrust into the role to save Earth, and we get to discover his story as the past and present unfolds. It’s only at the end that you really see the whole, big, beautiful, and somewhat dark truth.
