Nerd and jock harmony at last?

Doctor Who and a Dalek at Fan Expo 2012

This is going to be one interesting year at Fan Expo. The event just announced today that they are launching the “ultimate sports celebrity experience”, Fan Expo Sports, which will run at the same time as the rest of Fan Expo Canada from August 22 to 25.

That means that while the jocks are in their jerseys and meeting Joe Sakic, Gordie Howe, Bobby Orr, Joe Montana, and Hulk Hogan (a few of the confirmed guests for this year), the nerds will be trading comics, playing games, and dressed up as Star Wars characters.

If the 10-year-old in me has anything to say, it’s that nerds and jocks should not be cavorting at an event together. While sports fans do love their face and body paint, just like a lot of nerds, I’m not sure what the jocks will do when they spot The Hulk, or the Dalek that comes every year–or even the 501st Legion for that matter.

Maybe it will all be okay though, right? This is 2013, after all, and nerds have never been more popular, but some pre-pubescent part of me expects to see a significant rise in the amount of atomic wedgies and purple nurples at this year’s Fan Expo. Either that, or it will be an all-out war, like a scene out of one of the paintball battles in Community.

Or, you know, maybe I’m wrong. Maybe this is the end times when nerds and jocks shall get along in peace and harmony at last. (I’m guessing the former.)

The more serious question though is this: since Fan Expo is always packed and almost impossible to get in to on Saturday, where is Fan Expo Sports going to be that it won’t cause issues with crowd control?

Stay tuned for more. You can see the list of confirmed guests at Fan Expo Sports at fanexposports.com. So far, the only announcement for Fan Expo’s nerdy side is that Richard Dean Anderson is expected this year. The nerds will just have to wait a little longer, it seems, before we find out what’s in store for us.
