First Look: Marvel’s ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’

Agent Phil Coulson’s death in The Avengers movie was pretty hard to believe, if you were a fan. Here was one of the only binding forces between all of the Avengers character movies, played by one of the most beloved co-stars, Clark Gregg, and Marvel just killed him off?

Well, maybe he’s not so dead after all as it was announced last week that Marvel, maybe to the surprise of only a few people, would be reviving Agent Phil Coulson the ABC television series, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which is set to go “behind-the-scenes”, as it were, with the field agents at S.H.I.E.L.D. who face off against strange and super-powered troubles around the world.

Leading the team is Clark Gregg as Coulson, plus Brett Dalton, Ming-Na Wen, Iain De Caestecker, Elizabeth Henstridge, and Chloe Bennet. The Avengers director Joss Whedon is, thank-fully, executive producing the series, and he’s brought in some of his cohorts from previous projects to write and head up the team.

For those who don’t know, in the Marvel universe, S.H.I.E.L.D. stands for “Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division”, and they’re the group behind the super-team known as The Avengers. They essentially protect the United States from the bad guys who the army or the military couldn’t handle: super villains and the like, in other words.

The question now is what exactly happened to Agent Coulson? Is Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. set before the events of The Avengers movie, or–as might be a lot more likely–did Coulson somehow actually survive his wounds? I’m sure all will be revealed in time, as will any possible tie-ins to future Marvel movies.

As a Canadian though, my last question is simply who will end up carrying the series on television here? I could make some guesses, but we’ll know for sure at the start of June when all of the Upfront events are held to announce the fall season.

Watch the first promo for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.:

Synopsis: Clark Gregg reprises his role of Agent Phil Coulson from Marvel’s feature films as he assembles a small, highly select group of Agents from the worldwide law-enforcement organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D. Together they investigate the new, the strange, and the unknown across the globe, protecting the ordinary from the extraordinary. Coulson’s team consists of Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), highly trained in combat and espionage, Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen) expert pilot and martial artist, Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker); brilliant engineer and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) genius bio-chemist. Joining them on their journey into mystery is new recruit and computer hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet). From Executive Producers Joss Whedon (“Marvel’s The Avengers,” ”Buffy the Vampire Slayer”); Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen, “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” pilot co-writers (“Dollhouse,” “Dr.Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog”); Jeffrey Bell (“Angel,” “Alias”); and Jeph Loeb (“Smallville”) comes Marvel’s first TV series. “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” is produced by ABC Studios and Marvel Television.
