Hands on with the DJI FPV | Unboxing, review, and flight video

DJI FPV drone

There really is nothing else like the DJI FPV. In a special announcement today, DJI unveiled their latest drone, and it’s something different from the drones we’ve seen from the brand in the past.

The DJI FPV is a “first person view” drone, with a top speed of 140 km/h in manual mode, a 4k 60fps @ 120 Mbps camera, and of course, the company’s brand new FPV goggles and controllers.

With the DJI FPV combo, you get the drone, goggles, and controller, and the Fly More combo includes extra batteries, and a multi-batter charger. Optionally, for something different, you can also buy DJI’s new Motion controller, which fits in one hand and has a trigger for the throttle.

Flying the FPV drone is an incredible experience. The drone is exciting to fly, which isn’t always something you can say with every drone. It takes some practice and patience to master it, and the video it can capture is remarkable.

Since FPV drones are meant to give you the feeling of flying, the drone also only features a single-axis gimbal, which tilts from left to right as you fly in those directions, giving video more motion and energy than a standard three-axis gimbal.

Oh, and wait until you hear the startup sound the drone makes. It’s absolutely one of the selling-features.

There is a lot to talk about with the new drone, and I’ll have a full review coming up, but for now watch my hands-on video with the DJI FPV below as I unbox, review, and take it for the first flight in Toronto. Plus, scroll down for a few more photos of the drone combo.

The DJI FPV is available to purchase now on DJI.com, and retails for $1,299 USD for the DJI FPV Combo with the FPV drone, remote controller 2, and FPV Goggles V2. The Fly More Kit includes two extra batteries and charging hub for $299 USD, while the Motion Controller retails for $199 USD.

“Right out of the box, DJI FPV combines the best available technology for a hybrid drone like no other,” siad Ferdinand Wolf, Creative Director, DJI Europe. “It can fly like a racer, hover like a traditional drone, accelerate like a homebuilt project and stop faster than any of them. DJI FPV lets the world experience the absolute thrill of immersive drone flight without being intimidated by the technology or spending hours building a system from scratch. We can’t wait for the world to try it.”
