Video Hits: “Jack Sparrow” (feat. Michael Bolton) by The Lonely Island

Michael Bolton as Jack Sparrow

Remember when Saturday Night Live was funny? Unless you’re over the age of 30, you probably don’t remember SNL being all that hilarious, but every so often the show has a moment of genius. Tina Fey was certainly a most excellent host this past weekend, but it was clearly the guys from The Lonely Island, with a little help from Michael Bolton, who stole the show.

Proving he has an amazing sense of humour (and perhaps hoping just a little that he might get some viral love, Rick Astley style), Bolton sings it like it’s 1991, only this time he’s singing about Pirates of the Caribbean‘s Jack Sparrow and how much he loves movies while Akiva Schaffer, Jorma Taccone, and Andy Samberg hit the club.

As spoofs go, it could have been funnier–it’s really no “Jizz in My Pants,” and The Lonely Island guys are pretty much stand-ins in their own video–but Bolton is a pro and he makes for a very convincing Jack Sparrow, not to mention a great Forest Gump, Erin Brockovich and Tony Montana (from Scarface, you heathens).

Check the video for “Jack Sparrow” out below [FYI – it’s the NSFW version] and then have your say in the comments…

Video Hits is a semi-frequent spot where I feature a new music video to admire, mock, and discuss. From the great to the awful, whether they’re from twenty years or twenty minutes ago.

For you Canadians out there, the title of this series is totally a tribute to CBC’s original 80s TV series, Video Hits.

Whitney, while the Michael Bolton Digital Short was and is hilarious, could you plese change the link to the version that bleeps out the bad words? The version you linked is the unedited version, and with no warning, it’s clearly NSFW

No idea who Whitney is, but thanks for the heads up – very good point. The NSFW version is above (and now there’s a mention that it is NSFW) until Vevo or YouTube posts the clean version.

Love this song and kudos to Powell for leaving up the uncensored version, it’s funnier.
