David Cronenberg’s work to be celebrated in major TIFF exhibition

The work of legendary filmmaker David Cronenberg is to be celebrated with a TIFF film exhibition called the Cronenberg Project. It will showcase different elements of his work and responses to it including academic writing, live performances, TIFF commissioned work, behind-the-scenes footage, and old props and costumes. It will run from November 1, 2013 to January 19, 2014.

The main component of the project will be an exhibition called David Cronenberg: Evolution. It will be take place at TIFF Bell Lightbox in the HSBC Gallery. The exhibition will trace the development of Cronenberg as a filmmaker through the physical and psychological themes that dominate his work including telepaths, scientists, television producers and twin doctors. The exhibition will contain costumes, props, photographs, set-design drawings and other materials from Cronenberg’s films including Viedeodrome (1983), Dead Ringers (1988), Crash (1996), Naked Lunch (1991) and The Fly (1986).

“After collaborating with some of the most prestigious cultural institutions in the world to bring highly anticipated film exhibitions to Canada, we are excited to reach this major milestone at TIFF Bell Lightbox by originating a show of our own to share with the international community,” remarked Piers Handling, CEO and Director, TIFF. “This exhibition underscores our commitment as an organization to Canadian film and its legacy, and presenting and celebrating David Cronenberg is a natural choice.”

There will also be an experiential virtual museum called David Cronenberg: Virtual Exhibition. The Virtual Exhibition will include 35mm prints, digital restorations, an interactive digital project called Body/Mind/Change, and a Lance Weiler project. It was take place at the CIBC Gallery as well as online and will be comprised of essays, academic scholarship, an interactive map and timeline, behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with people who have worked with Cronenberg.

An art exhibition titled David Cronenberg: Transformation curated by Noah Cowan and David Liss will take place at Museum of Canadian Contemporary Art (MOCCA). Six new artworks by Candice Breitz, James Coupe, Marcel Dzama, Jeremy Shaw, Jamie Shovlin and Laurel Woodcock have been commissioned for the project. It will run from September 5 to December 29, 2013.

Following the Toronto dates, the exhibition will tour internationally, and will be the first original TIFF curated and launched exhibition to do so.
