Sean Gunn on saying goodbye to Kraglin and Rocket with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

by W. Andrew Powell

Sean Gunn surprised fans in Toronto this week for a special Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 screening, and he also sat down to talk about his last outing as Kraglin and Rocket.

Gunn has played the Ravager Kraglin since the first film, and for many who may not realize it, he is also the on set motion reference actor for Rocket.

Saying goodbye is “bittersweet,” he said. “I loved working with this cast of people. I’ll never have an experience like this again in my career. I’m not going to be looking for the next Guardians, because I’ve had it; it’s a one off.”

“I love the people that I worked with–the cast, crew, and everybody–so that part of it, the idea that there may be a goodbye, is a little sad. But there’s also the completion of the trilogy and being like, ‘hey, we made something and now we’re going to share this with an audience. How wonderful is that?’ And that part is sweet.”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is an emotional adventure, and while it’s funny and action-packed, it’s an emotionally driven story that revolves around Rocket, voiced by Bradley Cooper. It was a also a chance to give Kraglin a meaningful ending.

“Kraglin has had a journey of finding himself within this family of the Guardians, and I think we end with some kind of resolution to that that I feel really good about.”

“The stuff with Rocket was [also] very emotional for me,” he said.

“I’ve always said it takes a team of people to create Rocket. There’s a whole bunch of people–from my brother to me, to the visual effects team, and then of course Bradley Cooper creates the character essentially–we all put in our stuff, and I’ve done it for six movies, so I feel a kinship with Rocket. I feel very close to him.”

“And there was even more emotional stuff on this movie to dig into, and to work with, and it was hard for me, but I’m proud of what we did.”
