You can hardly turn around these days without reading about one movie awards or another. The actors have theirs, those unknown foreign press people have theirs, and don’t even get me started about all the critics circles. But what about the bad movies? When do they get their just deserts? At the Razzies of course!
This year Little Man and Basic Instinct 2 (which was dubbed “Basically, It Stinks, Too”) lead the pack of nominees for the worst of 2006, followed closely by Bloodrayne with 6 scornful nods, and Wicker Man with 5 irate jabs.
(In addition, a new category was added this year that summed up some of my most-hated films from 2006: “Worst Excuse for Family Entertainment”, which included nominees: Deck The Halls, Garfield 2: A Tail Of Two Kitties, RV, Santa Clause 3, and The Shaggy Dog.)
Now in its 27th year, the Razzie Awards kicked off in 1980 as a way to dis-honour the worst in film. Since then the Razzies have become a shining beacon for everything movie lovers hate about the soul-sucking side of the movie industry, including films like Catwoman, and Gigli.
Since the Razzies are tied so closely to the whole Oscar song and dance they can be a kind of breath of fresh air for anyone who needs a good laugh when everyone is being so serious about films. Even a few Hollywood types have dared to laugh at themselves in past years – including Oscar winner Halle Berry who showed up to accept her Razzie for Catwoman in 2005, and screenwriter Brian Helgeland who dropped by to accept his “prize” for writing The Postman in 1998.
Check out www.razzies.com for the full list of nominees and for other details on the “awards”. The official ceremonies will be held at 7:30 PM (PST) on Oscar eve – Saturday, February 24 at Hollywood’s Ivar Theatre.
