The Singer and The Songwriter

The Singer and The Songwriter released their single “Wild Heart” recently, and the video is mesmerizing and stunning. From their EP Directions, the song celebrates the stories of women, and features urban dance team, The Company, with videography by LA’s Vibrvncy.

“Wild Heart” beats with pure passion, and a soul that is deftly inspiring. The Singer and The Songwriter weave strong vocals and lyrics with a rhythm that is enchanting, and uplifting, and a message that is all about courage. “Wild Heart” is also song that lifts your spirits, and offers a story of hope.

With a sound that is partly reminiscent of The Decemberists, Rachel Garcia and Thu Tran are the artists behind The Singer and The Songwriter, and they have an infectious style that I loved. The music video for “Wild Heart” is also profound, and beautifully well done. The Company capture the spirit of the music, and literally run with it, bringing the story, and the message, to life.

The band explains that the lyrics “were inspired by Rachel’s grandmother, an immigrant from Mexico, who, as a young girl, used to sneak onto a train with her friends to steal the sugar cane that was drying on top of the cars.” When creating the music and the video, the artists “wanted to create an anthem that would capture and honor her wild, adventurous spirit.”

Garcia and Tran specifically wanted to work with The Company because they are an all-female group of choreographers and dancers, with choreography by Janelle Gleason, Melissa Batesting and Agnes Loyola.

As choreographer Janelle Gleason explained when she planned the piece, she had a clear vision: “one woman achieving success is all women achieving success.”
