Samsung announced the Galaxy S22 Ultra at Samsung Unpacked today with powerful processors, improved AI, the S Pen, and a number of new features.
Launched alongside the Galaxy S22 and S22+, the Galaxy S22 Ultra is the natural evolution of the Galaxy S phones and the Galaxy Note, and some of the phone’s best features all come back to using AI, and the NPU (neural processing unit) to take better photos, improve S Pen latency, and even maintain battery life longer.
The S22 Ultra really shines with all of the AI-powered features, like Nightography, improved videography–even in darker conditions–and Portrait mode.
Nightography makes use of the advanced AI, the powerful 4nm processor, and the NPU that’s now 2x faster than the S21 to automatically improve the quality of images and video while you’re shooting. The AI reduces noise and enhances natural details for vastly improved photography.
Portrait mode uses the AI stereo depth map to focus on people or pet’s faces, so background details stay in the background. The feature works at night and using the front facing camera too.
The S22 Ultra has a 6.8″ Edge QHD+ dynamic AMOLED 2X Display with a 120Hz refresh rate. The phone includes 5 cameras: a 12 MP ultra-wide, 108 MP wide with dual pixel auto focus, 10 MP 3x and 10 MP 10x telephoto, and a 40 MP front camera. It features a 5,000 mAh battery with up to 45 W wired charging, and 15 W wireless.
The S22 Ultra also includes Wi-Fi 6 and 6E, and uses an intelligent algorithm to help balance battery usage without giving up system power to help save up to 30% of battery life.
The S Pen has been improved for the new phone and now features 2.8ms latency, thanks again to AI, with handwriting detect in 88 languages. Samsung has also made Quick Notes available to use with some apps like the default browser.
Paired with the new Samsung Galaxy Tab S8, artists can now use the phone as a toolbar while they create, freeing up space on the tablet for drawing.
Other features on the phone include Auto Framerate, nona binning using the phone’s 108 MP sensor, and Auto Framing to track multiple subjects and adjust the zoom to perfectly fit everyone into one photo, or to track just one subject.
Samsung is also launching a new expert RAW feature on the Galaxy S22 Ultra so photographers can capture detailed images and process the images the way they like. The feature makes it easier to export images directly into Adobe Lightroom for quicker results.
Last but not least, Samsung is focused on eco-conscious changes, so the phones will come in greener packaging, with accessories made from recycled materials, including fishing nets, which is an industry first.
