Warcraft’s Burning Crusade sizzles onto shelves

by W. Andrew Powell

More than 8 million gamers around the world have played the massively multiplayer online role-playing game known as World of Warcraft, and tonight at midnight they’ll get a chance to try something new as the latest expansion hits store shelves. World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, which adds new elements to the subscription-based world, features an increased character cap up to level 70, new character races (the Blood Elves and the Draenei), flying mounts, and new abilities. That’s in addition to new areas, quests, monsters, and more.

Gamers can pick up the expansion starting at many stores at mignight tonight (January 16) for $49.99 in Canada and $39.99 in the United States, and the original game, which is necessary to run the expansion, retails for $19.99 at most stores in Canada and the U.S. In addition there’s a monthly fee of $14.99 U.S. (You can try out the game for ten days over at the official site at signup.worldofwarcraft.com/trial/.)

“While World of Warcraft has continued to grow rapidly along with its player population, The Burning Crusade will represent our single largest addition of new game content and new features to date,” said Mike Morhaime, president and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment.

WoW was originally released in November 1994 and currently features a number of realms which are based on types of gameplay. These include player versus environment and player versus player realms to roleplaying realms where players act and talk like their characters.
