Justina Machado and Alejandro Hernandez on The Horror of Dolores Roach | Interview

by W. Andrew Powell

It’s not every day that you get to work with Marc Maron, or “murder” him, for that matter.

The Horror of Dolores Roach is a new, bloody horror comedy on Prime Video, and Justina Machado stars as Dolores, an ex-convict working as a masseuse to make ends meet. Trying to make a new life, she finds herself in trouble when she murders one of her first clients after he gets handsy during a session.

And that’s where Maron comes in as Gideon Pearlman.

“He was very giving, and I appreciate that he understood that we were just figuring it out,” Machado said about working with Maron. “One of the things I remember about Marc is he was always like, ‘Whatever Justina needs–whatever she needs–I’m here for her.'”

“It was great working with him,” she said. “He made me feel very comfortable,” even as she had to get on top of him for the dark and hilarious scene.

“I’m a big fan of his podcast, and a big fan of Maron,” co-star Alejandro Hernandez said. “So when I met him on the first day, I was really excited and he was a lot of fun to work with.”

Hernandez plays Luis in the series, Dolores’ friend, and the owner of an empanada shop that ends up being very convenient after the murder.

The series is based on creator Aaron Mark’s one-woman play, and then his podcast, and it draws some inspiration from the classic story of Sweeney Todd. However Hernandez points out that the series is very unique, and it’s nothing like the musical.

“This is more in line with the original 1800s penny dreadful that was released in Victorian age London. It’s quite different.”

And most of all, it’s all about Dolores.

“You’re going to get to know her struggle when she gets out of jail, reintroducing herself into society, how she deals with that, how she deals with not being able to get a job, how she deals with having to stay somewhere because she has nowhere to go.”

“[And] how these two deal with each other because they need each other,” she said of Luis. “And that means you’re going to have a lot of horror and you’re going to have a lot of funny.”
