Series creator Haley Z. Boston knows that if you’re going to title your newest project Something Very Bad is Going to Happen that you absolutely have to follow through on the promise suggested by the name. And follow through she certainly does.
The twisted, psychological, eight episode horror thriller (which is now streaming on Netflix and is produced in part by The Duffer Brothers) tells the story of Rachel Harkin and Nicky Cunningham, a loving young couple on the verge of marriage. Rachel (Camila Morrone) is travelling with Nicky (Adam DiMarco, who can also be heard in the recently released undertone) to the rural, odd looking home of his parents (icons Jennifer Jason Leigh and Ted Levine). It’s five days until the wedding goes down, and as with most weddings, some things aren’t going to happen according to plan. But Rachel begins to sense that something sinister is about to happen beyond the usual nuptial jitters. And the more Rachel learns about Nicky’s family, his parents, his siblings (Jeff Wilbusch and Gus Birney), and her own secret history, the more certain she becomes that… well, something very bad is going to happen.
We caught up with Haley Z. Boston (Brand New Cherry Flavor) earlier this week to discussed what it’s like to have a show with such an obvious title, the art of the title drop, casting performers that can bring levity to a psychological thriller, the surreal nature of the show’s tone, fears of marriage and becoming a part of someone else’s family, and constructing a unique house where most of the action takes place.
Something Very Bad is Going to Happen is now streaming on Netflix.
