For her new series, Furious (premiering Monday, July 27th on Hulu on Disney+), actress and producer Emmy Rossum joins writer and showrunner Elizabeth Meriwether (The Dropout, Dying for Sex, New Girl) for a reinvention of the serial killer procedural thriller.
In Furious, Rossum stars as Alice Black, a former NYPD detective who recently joined the FBI, with hopes of becoming a part of the sex crimes unit. But before Alice can get the assignment she truly covets, sheโs forced to toil away in the bureauโs lowly call centre. Alice gets out of the office when former colleague Danny (Scoot McNairy) requests her personally from the bureau on a case involving the murder of a wealthy tycoonโs son. Similarities between the crime and a cold case from 2012 make Danny and Alice believe that they could have a serial killer on their hands.
And theyโre absolutely right, as a mysterious young woman, played by Lola Petticrew, sets in motion a string of murders all pointing in the same direction. As Alice continues to investigate the killings, she receives a large amount of pushback from superior officers, both for her personal and professional conduct. The case finds Alice at a down point in her life, as she is still struggling with the trauma of being abused by her former cop boyfriend, played by Jake Lacy, who just so happens to be part of the investigation on the NYPD side of things. As Alice gets closer to her suspect, and the killer starts racking up more bodies, the detective begins to notice that she might not be that different from the person sheโs tasked with taking down.
We had a chance to talk with Emmy Rossum this week during a stop in Toronto to talk about what sets Furious apart from other thrillers and procedurals, telling a mystery thatโs more about โwhyโ than โwho,โ working on a show where all the characters are compartmentalizing and wearing metaphorical masks just to get through the day, and how creator Meriwether and the cast are able to find humour in dark places.
Furious premieres on Hulu on Disney+ in Canada on Monday, July 27th with its first three episodes, with new episodes every Monday until the season finale on August 31st.
