The 45th Toronto International Film Festival is celebrating cinema with the launch of the inaugural TIFF Tribute Awards tonight on CTV.

Streamed internationally by Variety, and airing on CTV, thanks to a partnership with Bell Media, the 2020 TIFF Tribute Awards were announced last week by TIFF co-heads Joana Vicente and Cameron Bailey.

In addition to recognizing the work of icons and rising talent at the film festival, including Academy Award-winning actors Kate Winslet and Sir Anthony Hopkins, the event will feature a performance by Canadian superstar Shawn Mendes.

As well, director Chloe Zhao will be presented with the TIFF Ebert Director Award; Mira Nair will be honoured with the Jeff Skoll Award in Impact Media; and awards will also be presented to composer Terence Blanchard, and Beans director Tracey Deer.

Hosted by etalk’s Chloe Wilde and Tyrone Edwards, the show will also feature presenters Colin Farrell, Ava DuVernay, Bollywood star Tabu, Regina King, Olivia Colman, Jodie Foster, and NAACP Image Award winner Delroy Lindo.

Mendes’ performance is part of a new award TIFF also announced; the Shawn Mendes Foundation Changemaker Award. The award comes with a $10,000 prize to recognize one film and empower young voices in cinema. The award will be presented by the Shawn Mendes Foundation, and the winner has been picked by TIFF’s Next Wave Committee.

“I love that TIFF has found so many ways to keep the festival fun, considering the obvious limitations,” Edwards said. “The 2020 TIFF Tribute Awards is your fix for seeing all the big Hollywood names. I’m so honoured to be a part of the inaugural broadcast with my co-host Chloe Wilde, Ava DuVernay, Anthony Hopkins, and so many more.”

“I’m looking forward to everyone tuning into the first ever broadcast of the 2020 TIFF Tribute Awards! I even got out of my pyjamas and in to something a little more glam to celebrate the big night alongside my co-host,” Wilde said.

“There are some incredible moments, legendary honourees, and some surprises that you don’t want to miss. My personal favourite delight was Shawn Mendes’ cover of “Love’s in Need Of Love Today” by Stevie Wonder. And Kate Winslet. And Tracey Deer. And Regina King. Leave it to TIFF to get creative and orchestrate a celebration of industry greats and the power of film in the midst of a difficult year.”

The 2020 TIFF Tribute Awards air Tuesday, September 15 at 8 PM (ET/PT) on CTV, on demand on Crave, and everywhere CTV content can be found.
