The Toronto International Film Festival is gearing up for their landmark 50th edition this September, announcing the first Special Presentation titles with World Premieres coming to the city.
The five films announced so far are: The Captive by Alejandro Amenábar, The Christophers by Steven Soderbergh, Good News by Sung-hyun Byun, Hedda by Nia DaCosta, and Mile End Kicks by Chandler Levack.
“These first five films of our Official Selection reflect the innovation, heart, and global perspective that have made our Festival a home for great cinema over the past 50 editions,” said Cameron Bailey, CEO, TIFF.
“We’re excited to kick-off our Special Presentations with Chandler Levack’s Mile End Kicks, a young, Canadian director who has very close ties to TIFF in addition to these established directors. We can’t wait to share more in the weeks ahead as we celebrate this historic year with audiences and filmmakers from around the world.”
The 50th edition of the festival will take place from September 4 to 14, 2025.
TIFF also recently announced that John Candy: I Like Me, by director Colin Hanks and producer Ryan Reynolds, will open the festival.

“When you hear the name John Candy, your face lights up. He wasn’t just a great actor; he was an even better person. People loved his everyman qualities, but they didn’t know how relatable John really was. He went through the same struggles we all do, except now we talk about them. We are incredibly honored to have gotten to know the man better through this process and to bring the real John Candy to audiences starting with his hometown of Toronto,” said Hanks and Reynolds.
TIFF official venues for this year’s screenings will include TIFF Lightbox, Roy Thomson Hall, The Visa Screening Room at the Princess of Wales Theatre, Cineplex’s Scotiabank Theatre Toronto, Glenn Gould Studio at the Canadian Broadcast Centre, Cinema Park at David Pecaut Square, and The Royal Alexandra Theatre.
TIFF Festival Street will return once again for the opening weekend along King Street West with activations, activities, food trucks, and more.
