The world needs more journalism. We learn about people and current events through articles and stories, and the problem is that many outlets today don’t have the support they need.
That’s why donations, subscriptions, and other support have become vital to publications. Advertising simply is not enough to keep publications running, expanding, and evolving.
So what makes independent journalism so vital? Independent publications offer a different perspective on the world from large corporate media outlets. Independently run journalism is unbiased, offers more diversity of opinion, and they are driven by high standards. At a time when many publications are shutting down, and corporate media cuts jobs frequently, independent media outlets are needed more than ever.
This holiday season, before you start shopping, consider supporting one of these important Canadian outlets. For more suggestions on great causes that you can support this year, take a look at our past charity features.
The Narwhal
The Narwhal is one of Canada’s few non-profit publications. Dedicated to investigative journalism, they tell cover a wide range of news stories, with in-depth reporting.
“We have just two rules,” the publication states, “1) Follow the facts. 2) Tell it like it is.”
“We’re tired of false dichotomies and business-as-usual perspectives. We’re not shy about the fact we think Canada’s greatest assets are our people, our lakes, our rivers, our forests. We tell stories Canada’s big news outlets miss and hustle to help our readers make sense of complex (sometimes downright messy) issues. As a non-profit online magazine, our goal isn’t to sell advertising or to please corporate bigwigs–it’s to bring evidence-based news and analysis to the surface for our readers.”
They also offer a number of ways that you can support them, and it’s worth noting that they are a true charity, so Canadians receive receipts that can be claimed on your taxes.
The Tyee
While The Tyee may be a true British Columbia news magazine, they report on issues affecting people across Canada. The award-winning publication covers health and culture, political and Indigenous news, with thoughtful commentaries and analysis.
“The Tyee does not make a profit,” they note on their website. “Every dollar we receive we invest in journalism.”
“We’re devoted to fact-driven stories, reporting and analysis that informs and enlivens our democratic conversation. Our reporting has changed laws, started movements and garnered numerous awards. While some journalism gives the last word to power, we try to give the last word to ordinary folks. Our name? It’s pronounced Tie-yee. We explain its origins in the ‘our region’ section below.”

The Walrus
The Walrus offers award-winning journalism that covers Canadian and international news and events, but they also publish fiction, poetry, photography, and illustrations. Their sense of humour adds depth and nuance to their articles, and education is part of their mandate.
“The Walrus is invested in the idea that a healthy society relies on informed citizens. We publish a national magazine eight times a year along with daily content at thewalrus.ca. Since our first issue, in 2003, we have featured award-winning writers and artists exploring issues related to technology, politics, business, the environment, and arts and culture.”
As a registered charity, you can donate to support The Walrus, and they also offer subscriptions.
