Back to school - Affordable phones

Are you or your kids ready for a new phone? No matter what your back to school looks like this year, if you’re looking for a new phone, I have three very impressive options to fit any budget.

From Apple’s iPhone SE, to the TCL 10 Pro, and Samsung’s A51, these three phones are excellent for photos, and battery life, with bright displays for every task.

iPhone SE

iPhone SE 2nd Generation

The 2nd generation iPhone SE is everything you expect from an Apple phone, in a slim, eye-catching design. Available in (product)Red, white, and black, the device is easily the most comfortable phone I’ve picked up in the last few years. It’s light, and feels like a premium phone in a small package.

The 4.7″ screen is bright, clear, and vibrant, and it comes with the same core camera you’ll find in the iPhone 11, including Live Photo, 4K and 60 FPS video, Smart HDR, high efficiency files, and slo-mo.

Battery life on the phone is also great, and will last most users all day long. It’s also water resistant, features the impressive A13 Bionic chip, and comes with great tools and options built-in, like GarageBand, iMovie, Apple TV, and Apple Arcade.

iPhone SE is available in 64 GB, 128 GB, and 256 GB models, starting at $615 at Bell Canada and The Source, and go up to $899.

TCL 10 Pro

TCL 10 Pro

The TCL 10 Pro is one of the most surprising devices I’ve tried in 2020. TCL has been a top TV maker for years, and this year they moved into the smartphone market with one of my favourite new phones.

Featuring a bright 6.47″ curved AMOLED display with a solid processor, 6GB RAM, and 128GB of storage, the phone has power to spare, quick charging, and it looks great in ember gray.

On top of the great display and speed, the phone has a fingerprint sensor, a 64 MP rear camera, and a 16 MP selfie camera. The cameras have a lot of features, including night mode, super macro, portraits, and more.

Overall, it’s a great Android device, and the TCL 10 Pro feels like it perfectly balances price and features. You can pick it up for $700 with Bell.

Samsung A51

Samsung A51

Finally, if you want the most affordable deal, and still a good overall phone–especially for younger users–I’m a big fan of the Samsung A51.

Following last year’s very good A50, the A51 has a sharp, bright 6.5″ AMOLED Infinity-O display, and all the features that make Samsung the best in Android phones. The 4000 mAh battery will last all day long, and charges up quick, plus the phone has a 48 MP camera, 64 GB of storage, and expandable memory.

The phone also takes excellent selfies thanks to the 32MP front camera. You can pick it up on sale right now at Best Buy for $429.99.
