Ncuti Gatwa & Millie Gibson on Doctor Who, and Russell T Davies | Interview

The Doctor is back, and so is Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies, as the series arrives on Disney+. Starring Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor, with his companion, Ruby Sunday, played by Millie Gibson, the new series promises epic adventures ahead.

“What makes him tick?” Gatwa said. “Life. Life, and the universe, and everything that he’s looking at. Everything he’s consuming with his senses. He is excited, because he has such a joie de vivre.”

“He’s the same doctor that we’ve all known and loved for many, many, many years. He’s full of compassion, adventure and all of that, but this iteration just likes to twirl–and also likes to do all the things that the other Doctors have done–but likes to twirl in a club, in a kilt, to EDM,” he said.

The Doctor and Ruby Sunday are pushed together after a long string of bad luck, but there’s a deeper connection between them.

“I think the fact that they’re both lost children and they’re both foundlings; I think they have that sort of deep… connection,” Gibson said. “That’s not just a bond; it’s a shared experience. I think they have a certain love for one another that definitely grows, and it’s very platonic and sort of a twin flame energy that they have going on.”

“But, I think it’s very prominent that they’re both lost children, and it’s nice to kind of find their family in one another,” she said.

And the best part of stepping into the Doctor Who universe? For Gatwa it’s working with long-time showrunner Russell T Davies, who has returned once again for the latest series.

“There’s no bigger Whovian. That man has watched every single episode ten times,” Gatwa said.

“Having someone like that at the helm, and driving our scripts, and driving the whole season, and series, and show, is just very fun. It means that we have to acquire skills very quickly; on the day, on the spot. You learn a new challenge every week,” he added.
