It’s nearly time for TIFF 2017! The 42nd Toronto International Film Festival is just a few days away, and today the festival announced hundreds of stars, talent, and filmmakers who will be visiting the city between September 7 to 17 for the red carpets, parties, industry sessions, interviews, and screenings.
There are few things more satisfying than taking a walk around the city on a warm summer night with a carefully curated playlist pumping through a set of headphones. Mastercard and Apple Music know just that feeling and have taken it to the next level with celebrity constructed soundtracks made specifically for Toronto and Montreal.
Get ready to laugh, Toronto. The sixth edition of JFL42–Toronto’s comedy festival–returns this fall from September 21 to 30, and this year’s headliners include Bill Burr, John Mulaney, Ali Wong, Tim and Eric, My Favorite Murder, and Tom Segura.
“Girls” still equals pink. That was my first impression of the well-organized and equally inspired Girl Talk Empowerment Day at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre last Tuesday. Their 5th annual, the event ran from from morning to mid-day with more than 1000 girls ages 11-18 in attendance.
The Toronto International Film Festival is just over three months away, and select TIFF members can start planning their adventures for September starting today with advanced purchases of TIFF ticket packages. Visa cardholders can purchase ticket packages starting on June 14, and open to the public as of June 21.
It’s not every day that you get invited to a Canadian icon’s home. Last Saturday, before he went to the ACTRA Awards, I dropped by Yannick Bisson’s house to talk about his career, Murdoch Mysteries, and a special new project that he’s working on with his wife. It was really a relaxed chat with one of Canada’s most recognized stars.
Until very recently I had never participated in or experienced one of those roll playing games–the escape rooms–not because I am in any way adverse to them, I just simply haven’t. My first experience at such a game was the brand new evolution in the format based on the highly successful TV detective series Murdoch Mysteries—The Secret of Station House No. 4: A Secret City Adventure–and I enjoyed the whole experience most mightily.
Beauty and the Beast opens in theatres on March 17, but well ahead of the premiere, Walt Disney has created a special sneak peek of the film at Casa Loma in Toronto, and it’s open all Family Day long weekend for fans to get in the spirit of the new live action film.
Thank-you, 2016. Yes, it was a tough year, both personally and as a fan of popular culture and its icons, but it was also one of The GATE’s best years. It’s worth taking a moment now at the end of 2016 to look back on some of the awesome that came our way over the last 365 days.
The streets are steamier than ever for the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival. In the 16 years that I’ve covered the “Festival of Festivals” I don’t recall it ever being quite this hot before, but there’s a first for everything at TIFF. And TIFF is always changing.
