Lee Majdoub | Sonic The Hedgehog

Lee Majdoub and Jim Carrey

Canadian actor Lee Majdoub had a breakout opportunity with Sonic The Hedgehog, and the result is what I can only call a hilarious, and fan-favourite character.

In Sonic The Hedgehog, Majdoub plays Agent Stone, the sidekick to Jim Carrey’s nefarious Dr. Robotnik. In the script, the role was what you might expect, but once Carrey and Majdoub met on set, they ended up improvising, which helped turn Agent Stone into more than just a henchman.

“A lot of what you see that relationship turn into, wasn’t on the page initially,” Majdoub said. “Stone was there to be the straight man, if you will. No humour, no nothing–just says his lines, he’s straight faced.”

“And then through chatting with Jim, and Jim having these ideas, and we were talking with [director] Jeff [Fowler], and ideas were always welcome.”

“So then it just evolved into this fun… Jim refers to it as kind of like an Inspector Clouseau and Kato type thing. I kind of akin it to Mr. Burns and Smithers a bit, where there’s this admiration, and this judgement at times.”

The result is a character that fans have truly embraced, with tons of fan art, fan fiction, and so much more. It makes it easy to wonder what could happen if there’s a sequel and the two character are reunited.

Majdoub has made a name for himself with recurring roles on CW’s The 100, HBO’s You Me Her, and Netflix’s Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, and I can’t wait to see what comes next for him.

Watch the video interview with Majdoub below, and, hey, don’t be a stranger Mr. Carrey. We need to see more of Dr. Robotnik and Agent Stone down the road.

Sonic The Hedgehog is out now on digital and arrives on Blu-ray May 19.
