Filmmaker William Oldroyd talks about his debut feature, ‘Lady Macbeth’

British filmmaker William Oldroyd might have a background in theatre, but his debut feature, Lady Macbeth (opening in Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal this weekend) has less in common with Shakespeare than its title might suggest. More attuned to contemporary cinema and classic literature, Oldroyd’s film breathes new life into stodgy tropes of Victorian Era period pieces and creates a monster of a sexually loaded power struggle.

Review: ‘Wolf Warrior 2,’ a film by and starring Wu Jing

A sequel to director and star Wu Jing’s 2015 sleeper hit, Wolf Warrior 2 is a Chinese action thriller very much in the Rambo or Chuck Norris style. It’s bombastic, jingoistic, and makes little sense if you stop to think about how the characters are related to one another or how the plot is barely functional. That doesn’t mean it’s not a ton of fun, though, especially when it builds to a spectacularly memorable climax that gives the audience their money’s worth and then some. It’s a large improvement over its predecessor in almost every respect, and most likely marks the arrival of a new blockbuster Chinese franchise.

The Hotel Saskatchewan in Regina

Regina’s historic and regal Hotel Saskatchewan

Historic hotels are doorways into a city, where you not only peer into the past and future, but live a part of the story the city has to share. Across Canada, some of the most incredible stories and spaces started with the stunning Canadian Pacific Railway hotels that were opened in the years following Confederation, like Regina's Hotel Saskatchewan.

Mama Shelter Los Angeles with Hamilton Watches

Often my discoveries of cool new hotels come as a part of a larger or much different purpose for my actually being there. Sometimes a cool interview with an actor or director brings me to their favourite hotels which then gives me the opportunity to explore and develop an appreciation for that hotel independently and sometimes it is a special occasion that is either specific to the hotel or specifically related to the hotel.
