Nominations for the 2009 MuchMusic Video Awards are in, and love them or not, Nickelback topped the list with five nods, tied with R&B singer Danny Fernandes.
On Thursday, March 12, Newfoundland’s The Novaks, and Winnipeg’s Waking Eyes played Lee’s Palace in Toronto for the 2009 Canadian Musicfest, and The GATE was there to snap a few photos.
Canadian Music Week kicked off in Toronto on Wednesday, March 11 with a handful of shows across the city, including a special invite-only party at Tattoo Rock Parlour.

Canadian pop-rockers Hedley have an early lead for the 19th Annual MuchMusic Video Awards, claiming a total of six nominations for their radio hits, “For The Nights I Can’t Remember”, and “She’s So Sorry”. The band, which is fronted by Canadian Idol finalist Jacob Hoggard, has been a perennial fan favorite at both the Juno Awards and MMVAs, but are going to have to wait until Sunday, June 15 to find out if they can take home any hardware.
MuchMusic kicked off voting for the 2008 MuchMusic Video Awards earlier this week, giving fans their opportunity to cast a vote for the People’s Choice categories. In at least one category, the fight could be a hard-fought one, with last year’s victor Avril Lavigne facing off against Canada’s latest musical darling, Feist.
Their name practically says it all. Toronto’s God Made Me Funky have been wowing audiences since 1996 with their extremely danceable, high-energy style. And now they’re headed to the Junos. [Video]
