A peek at CHUM Fanfest 2010

By W. Andrew Powell • Mar 13th, 2010 • Category: Festivals & Events, Photography

Before I run out to check out the Indie Awards for this year’s Canadian Music Week, I wanted to drop a couple of photos from last night’s CHUM Fanfest at the Masonic Temple.

This is a pretty big year for The GATE; 2010 represents our tenth year writing about entertainment, and maybe most importantly, music.

Hayley Williams and Paramore in Toronto

By W. Andrew Powell • Oct 16th, 2009 • Category: Festivals & Events, Photography

The Kool Haus in Toronto was packed with pushing, excited, screaming fans on Thursday night (October 15) as Paramore took to the stage to perform a few songs.

Covering some of their biggest songs, including a number from their new album Brand New Eyes, Hayley Williams and the band performed fifteen songs, wrapping up with an encore featuring “Misguided Ghosts,” “Misery Business,” and “Brick By Boring Brick.”

U2’s 360 Tour hits Toronto for first of two shows

By W. Andrew Powell • Sep 17th, 2009 • Category: Features, Festivals & Events, Photography

One of the world’s greatest rock bands stopped at Toronto’s Rogers Centre tonight for the first of two massive shows. The band is of course U2, in town for their 360° Tour, and the crowd went insane as Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen, Jr. all rocked their hearts out.

A few of my favorite things from the 2009 CNE

By W. Andrew Powell • Aug 26th, 2009 • Category: Festivals & Events

Ask any of my friends and they’ll tell you, there’s nothing I would rather do at the end of August than take in the Canadian National Exhibition for a couple of hours. For just over two weeks each year I’ll find any excuse to go to The Ex, and most years I go at least five or six times, if not more.

Taylor Lautner drives ‘em crazy at the MMVAs

Celebutantes, nouveau famous, and the genuinely talented all collided tonight at the 2009 MuchMusic Video Awards for an evening of partying, schmoozing, and well, posing.

It was a good show, as these things go, and I really enjoyed the lineup of stars, from the Black Eyed Peas and Audrina Patridge to Billy Talent (who brought their dads with them for Father’s Day!) and The Stills. (I’ll also have to admit that it was nice to see Girlicious again this year, if for no other reason than the lovely Nichole Cordova.)

A night with Outlaws & Gunslingers

By W. Andrew Powell • Jun 19th, 2009 • Category: Festivals & Events

My first night of NXNE felt shorter than I intended, but it was a great freaking evening. I had a string of places I wanted to check out, with about ten different acts I wanted to see, but I knew that wasn’t going to happen.

In the end I went to my perennial concert hangout: Lee’s Palace, where the Outlaws & Gunslingers showcase was featuring a pile of my favorite alt-country performers.

Dust off the blog, bring on CMW

By W. Andrew Powell • Mar 4th, 2009 • Category: Festivals & Events, Music & CDs

I have to admit it – this has been a bad year for me in terms of blogging. I’ve been staying on top of my columns, articles, and doing my weekly gig talking entertainment with Mike Nabuurs on the radio, but the blog has been getting a bit dusty.

Geek week: Xbox, Renée O’Connor, and Brent Spiner

By W. Andrew Powell • Aug 22nd, 2008 • Category: Festivals & Events, Photography, The GATE

This week has been a total geek’s dream come true.

On Monday I spent the night playing Too Human.

On Tuesday there was a pre-Toronto Film Fest screening of Control Alt Delete (I’m itching to post the review, but you’ll have to wait).

2008 MMVAs – Quick photos

By W. Andrew Powell • Jun 16th, 2008 • Category: Festivals & Events, Photography, The GATE

Okay, so it was a busy, busy night. I just got home from the MuchMusic Video Awards and I ended up shooting just over 600 photos (not as many as some years, but enough to make sorting and editing a major job). I got images of nearly all the major attendees, including the New Kids on the Block, Rihanna, Rainn Wilson, Girlicious, Simple Plan and a bunch of others.
